Detailed Synopsis
As the Midnight Society members are walking towards their camp, Gary urges them on. David mentions that it is a full moon on a Leap year and tonight's the night that the spirits are free to take victims away but Frank thinks he made it up. They arrive at the camp and find someone dressed in a hood and cape wearing a mask. The person walks towards them and then pulls off their mask, revealing themselves to be Betty Ann. Kiki asks her what she is doing, and Betty Ann says it is a full moon on Leap year and says her mask within the circle is their only protection. Frank calls it a dumb joke. Betty Ann tells them that they don't have to believe her, but it is an old superstition. She says her tale takes place on February 29th, Leap year which happens every four years and when it comes with a full moon, watch out, for the spirits who prowl on a full moon Leap year are hunting and it may be for you. Betty Ann then starts her tale.
Betty Ann says that Claire Dickens and Andrew Dickens were on their way home from a trip to an amusement park with Louise Lam, their favorite babysitter.
Andrew tells Louise that the Laughing in the Dark ride was awesome, and he almost died when Zeebo jumped out. Claire calls Andrew childish and Louise warns them to be nice or she won't take them to Molly's the banana split shop. They come to a T-intersection and see an odd-looking sign indicating a left to get to Highway 9. Louise takes a left and they eventually arrive at The Whisper Inn. They get out so Louise can ask directions and when they enter the unlocked tavern nearby it appears to be empty. Louise says hello, but no one answers. Andrew opens the door to leave and Master Raymond yells at to him to shut the door. Louise tells him that they are lost, but Raymond says they are on time. Louise says they are looking for Highway 9 to Victor Heights. Raymond says that they have strayed far off their path, but he knows of a short cut. He tells them to take the dirt road through the woods and it will shorten their trip by many miles. Andrew uses his portable fan to make the windchimes in the tavern move and his portable fan suddenly jumps out of his hand. They leave the tavern, and the wind suddenly starts to gust. They drive along the dirt path and the vehicle stalls in front of a large house.
Louise wants to use the phone at the house, but Andrew suggests they go back to the tavern and use their phone. Louise leaves Claire and Andrew in the vehicle while she goes to the house. The door opens as she is about to knock on it and she goes inside as the door closes behind her. After a while Louise doesn't return, and Claire decides she is going to go into the house. Andrew runs in front of Claire to the house and Claire knocks on the door. The door opens and Claire and Andrew enter the house, and the door shuts behind them. They call out for Louise and walk to an upstairs hallway with empty picture frames. They enter an open door and see a room with banana splits placed along a table. Andrew picks one up to eat and as Claire goes to take a bite from it, Andrew drops it on the floor where it dissolves, and Raymond's face appears. They run out of the house and back to the tavern. They enter the tavern, but this time it is full of people.
Claire tells them that they came from the house in the woods, and she thinks Louise is lost there. Elegant Lady offers them punch. Dancing Woman and Man tells them that Louise will be fine once the sun sets, but Elegant Woman says that isn't true. Dancing Woman and Man says it is Leap year and it is a full moon, which is why they are there. Elegant Lady tells Claire that she reminds her of her daughter and Jukebox Man tells Claire that Dancing Woman and Man are just pulling their chain. Claire asks who lives in the house and Jukebox Man says the better question is who the house is living in. Brush Salesman says Raymond owns the house and will own it for many years to come and then offers to sell them a brush. Claire and Andrew leave the tavern but then go back in to use the telephone. When they enter the tavern, it is empty again. Claire decides they have to go back to the house to get Louise. They enter the house and hear whispering and laughing coming from the walls. They hear Louise's voice, and she tells them that she is in the living room. They enter the living room and Louise's image is inside of a mirror. She tells them that she is upstairs and asks them to help her. Her image disappears and is replace by that of Raymond, who starts to laugh. They run to the front door, but it is locked. Andrew wants to leave, but Claire tells him that she needs his help, and he agrees to help look for Louise. As they walk in the upstairs hallway, the patrons from the tavern appear in the once empty picture frames.
They hear Louise's voice and enter a bedroom and find her sitting in a rocking chair holding what appears to be a baby. She tells them not to worry and that they can leave as soon as the baby is asleep. They see Raymond's ring on Louise's finger and realize it is really Raymond in disguise and Raymond throws the baby at Claire, which turns into snakes. Claire and Andrew run away, and Andrew runs to the front door and tries to open it again, while Claire just runs into the hallway. Elegant Lady tells Claire again how much she reminds her of her daughter and Claire runs away. She calls for Louise and hears Louise call to her. Claire comes to a picture frame which appears to have Louise's face emerging from the frame. Louise asks her to help her, and Claire enters a secret room when she pulls on a candle stick by the picture frame. A draft causes the door to open, and Andrew figures out how to open it. Andrew goes running to find Claire and she tells him about the secret room. Andrew enters the room after using his portable fan to dispel Raymond who had appeared in the picture frame. Raymond appears in the room and tells Claire and Andrew that when the sun sets, Louise's soul will be his and her energy will keep him and the house alive. Andew throws a vase through a window and the breeze coming in causes Raymond to dissipate. Louise, Claire and Andrew run to the front door, but Raymond appears before them. Andrew tries to use his portable fan against Raymond, but Raymond causes it to fly out of Andrew's hands. Raymond hypnotizes Louise and Claire and then tells Andrew to leave. Elegant Lady appears and challenges Raymond and he orders her back to the walls. Elegant Lady opens the front door and Louise and Claire snap back to their senses, and they run out of the house with Andrew. They get into their vehicle, which starts, and drive away. Shortly after a new car drives up to the house and then stalls.
Betty Ann says that the house still stands to that day and people disappear when the moon is full on February 29th. Betty Ann puts her mask back on and Gary ends the meeting.
