Detailed Synopsis
Betty Ann catches Tucker messing with the pouch of sand and Gary grabs it away and tells him not to touch the pouch. Betty Ann says that Sam will be telling her tale next week and Kiki is next up to tale a tale. Frank slowly walks to the circle and tells the other members that he was helping his brother move all day. Kiki says she likes moving, not the moving of stuff but the mystery of moving into a new place. She remarks, you always wonder what the person who lived there previously was like and why they left. She says that her story is about moving and about promises. She continues that a promise is a pledge, something to rely on and you should never break a promise, because if you do, it might come back to haunt you. Kikie is about to start her tale when she notices the pouch is empty and Gary yells at Tucker to give the sand back. Kiki then starts her tale.
She says Stacy Cooper was going through a rough time as it seemed like her parents were about to get a divorce and she and Bonnie Cooper had to move to a tiny apartment across town.
Stacy brings up to Bonnie how small the apartment is, and Bonnie tells her it is the only one she can afford. They hear a crash and Stacy admonishes Bugsy for knocking over a lamp. As Stacy and Bonnie are walking down the apartment complex hallway, Stacy notices the door to apartment 214 open. In the parking lot, Tibold Holstrom shouts hey to Bonnie, scaring her and causing her to drop her jar of pennies. He tells her that she can't park her car there and to move her car. As Stacy is walking back to her apartment to get a broom and dustpan, the door to room 214 opens again. One night while Stacy is reading her book on the balcony, she hears a tapping noise come from the window of apartment 214. She goes inside her apartment and hears rapping on her apartment door. When she opens the door, no one is there, but the door to apartment 214 opens. She is about to walk to 214 when Bonnie catches her and asks what she is doing wandering around at night.
One day after school, Angela catches Stacy trying to listen for noise coming from 214. Angela introduces herself and tells Stacy she doesn't think anyone lives in 214. Stacy asks Angela if she would like to hang out sometime and she responds, maybe. Stacy comes home late one day because the bus broke down and she sees Madeline Koegel staring at her from 214. Stacy knocks on Madeline's door and as she is walking away the door opens. She goes inside and Madeline invites her to have some tea. Stacy notices all the art on the walls and Madeline tells her that they are all original pieces of hers. Stacy notices a painting of a family and asks if it is of her children. Madeline tells her the painting is of her nephew Frank, who promised to let Madeline live with him, but then asked her to leave once his family got larger. Stacy is shocked that Frank broke his promise so easily and Madeline says that is when she moved to her apartment, away from her family and friends. Madeline suggests Stacy visit everyonce in a while so neither of them miss their old friends so much.
Kiki says as the days went by, Stacy and Madeline spent a ton of time together and Stacy helped Madeline with some of the tougher chores in her apartment. Madeline in turn told Stacy really cool stories about her life. It was perfect as Madeline wasn't lonely anymore and Stacy found her first new friend.
One day Madeline asks Stacy if she can stop by her apartment tomorrow as it is a day she prefers not to be alone. Stacy then promises she will stop by. Before Stacy leaves, Madeline tells her that she has a surprise for her that she will give her tomorrow. The next day, Angela invites Stacy to come with her to the Battle of the Bands. Stacy at first says she can't go, because she promised to visit someone, but then agrees to go. As Stacy rides off in Angela's mother's car, Madeline sees her from her apartment. After the show, Stacy thanks Angela for inviting her and as Stacy is walking to her apartment, she hears crying coming from 214. She walks into Madeline's dark apartment and Madeline yells at her about breaking her promise. When Stacy turns the lights on, the apartment is empty of everything. The door closes and locks and Stacy starts banging on the door for help. Tibold opens the door and Stacy runs to her apartment as he asks her what she was doing in 214. Stacy tells Bonnie about Madeline, 214 being empty, and how she broke her promise to Madeline. The next day Bonnie and Stacy go to the manager's office and Bonnie knocks on the door. She asks Tibold if Madeline moved out, and Tibold tells her that no one has lived in 214 for years.
Kiki tells the others that all Stacy new for sure was that Madeline left and she would have to live with the guilt of breaking her promise. As time went on she realized Madeline was never coming back and she wouldn't have the chance to apologize.
One night Bonnie goes on a date with her estranged husband leaving Stacy alone. Later someone knocks on the front door. Stacy looks through the peephole and sees Madeline, but when she opens the door, Madeline is not there. Stacy walks to 214 and knocks on the door and when no one answers, enter the apartment. She looks around the apartment and it is still empty, except for a painting of Madeline and Stacy sitting and having tea. Stacy picks up the painting and as she is looking at it, the apartment suddenly returns to having furniture. Madeline appears and reminds Stacy that Stacy had promised to visit her. Madeline says it was a very lonely day for her as it was the anniversary of her death. Stacy runs throws the painting to the ground and runs back to her apartment. A note is slid under her doorway which reads, "Why did you break your promise?" and when Stacy looks out her window, Madeline is standing outside staring at her. Stacy runs to Angela's apartment and bangs on the front door, but no one opens the door. The lights go out in the hallway and Stacy screams when she sees someone walking towards her. Tibold asks her why she is screaming and tells her to go back to her apartment. She mentions Madeline and he repeats that no one lives in 214 and everyone time he shows it to potential clients, something happens and they get scared away. Tibold leaves to fix the fuses and refuses to let Stacy go with him. Stacy sees Bugsy walk inside 214 and goes into the apartment. The apartment again is full of furniture and when she finds Bugsy, Madeline yells at her that she broke her promise, just like her nephew. Stacy apologizes and says she just wanted to make a new friend. Madeline says it is very important to make friends and she shouldn't be alone and says she won't bother her anymore. Madeline tells Stacy she is too old and set in her ways to move on and 214 is where she is going to stay as no one wants her.
Later, Stacy and Bonnie move into Madeline's old apartment and Stacy brings Madeline some flowers.
Kiki says that when Stacy and Bonnie moved into Madeline's old apartment, she made up for her broken promise, because Madeline wasn't going to be alone anymore. Kiki then ends her story. As Gary goes to put out the fire, he realizes Tucker hid the water bucket.
