Background

Caesar is a Consul of the Roman Republic and in charge of the 13th Legion of the Roman Army. He is married to Calpurnia and had a daughter named Julia who was married to Pompey Magnus, but died during childbirth.


During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 1 The Stolen Eagle played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar and his 13th Legion defeat the Gaulish army of Vercingetorix. He receives a letter from Pompey Magnus informing him his Daughter Julia died while giving birth to a stillborn daughter. A group of men wearing blue dye break into Caesar's camp and steal the eagle standard. Marcus Junius Brutus arrives at Caesar's camp and they discuss recent events and Brutus' mother Servilia of the Junii, who is upset Caesar hasn't written to her lately. Mark Antony interrupts them and asks for gold to reclaim the eagle standard. Caesar orders Strabo to give Antony the gold he needs. Brutus asks about the eagle and Caesar tells him about its theft and the discontent amongst the legion it has caused. Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo return to camp with the standard and Gaius Octavian. Caesar is given Sextus' severed head and he realizes Pompey has already turned against him. Caesar and his army burn their camp and are on the move.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 2 How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic played by Ciaran Hinds

During the winter in Gaul near the Italian border, Posca tells Caesar more troops are deserting. He warns Caesar time is running out and they must act, however Caesar reassures Posca he knows what he is doing. When Posca notices a large sum of money has been spent, Caesar tells him he has spent it to nominate Mark Antony as the people's tribune. A Tribune reads off the amount of available soldiers to Caesar when a Courier arrives with news of the attack on Mark Antony and the senate proposal. Mark Antony returns to camp and Caesar parades him in front of the troops as a justified reason to invade Rome beyond Caesar being declared an enemy of Rome. Titus is awarded for his bravery with a bag of coins. Caesar and his men cross the Rubicon into Italy.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 3 An Owl in the Thornbrush played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar orders Lucius to take Titus and a group of Ubiians to Rome to post a proclamation on the Senate door. He then asks Mark Antony why Lucius seems upset and Mark Antony tells him it is because Lucius feels he will be punished by the Gods for being a traitor. Caesar asks if Lucius can be trusted and Mark Antony promises him Lucius wouldn't betray the 13th Legion. As they near Rome, Mark Antony asks Caesar how he can be so calm and Caesar admits he doesn't feel calm on the inside.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 4 Stealing from Saturn played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar goes to the Temple of Jupiter to ask the augurs if they can determine if the Gods favor him. The Chief Augur tells him they will do an augur on the first clean morning. At Atia's dinner party, Caesar and Mark Antony approach the Chief Augur and offer him a bribe, which he accepts. During the party, Posca calls Caesar to the front door and finds Titus Pullo with a tied up Quintus Pompey. Titus tells him and Mark Antony he has the stolen Roman gold and where it is. Caesar tells Quintus he will offer his father a truce and his him sent on his way. He tells Mark Antony to take Titus and to bring the gold back. As he is talking to Octavian, Caesar suffers from a seizure and Posca and Octavian hide him in a storage closet until the seizure passes. Demeter hears a heavy breathing noise coming from the storage room and later sees Caesar and Octavian leave the room. Caesar leaves the party, but instead of going home, he meets with Servilia and they make love. At the Temple of Jupiter the Chief Augur has a group of pigeons released and then tells Caesar the Gods favor him.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 5 The Ram has Touched the Wall played by Ciaran Hinds

Posca tells Caesar he has been invited to dine with Atia, but Caesar tells Posca to decline her offer. Caesar continues his affair with Servilia. When Caesar receives the acceptance of his truce letter from Pompey, he refuses to accept the truce due to Pompey refusing to meet him. He chooses not to pursue Pompey, for he thinks Pompey's forces are shrinking every day. While Caesar, Posca and Calpurnia are traveling through Rome, they come across the graffiti depicting Caesar having sex with Servilia. Calpurnia orders Caesar to break up with Servilia or she will divorce him. Caesar goes to the home of Servilia and tells her they can no longer see each other. He then tells Mark Antony he will stay in Rome while Caesar travels south to attack Pompey. When Caesar arrives at Pompey's camp, he finds it deserted and is told Pompey has fled to Greece.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 6 Egeria played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar sends a letter to Mark Antony telling him that he is sorely outnumbered and he needs Mark Antony to organize the 13th Legion.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 7 Pharsalus played by Ciaran Hinds

Fulvio enters Caesar's tent and tells him that Pompey's army is on the move and Caesar decides to stand and fight, which confuses Posca due to them being outnumbered, but Caesar tells him their men will be better motivated then Pompey's men as they will be against a proverbial wall. Caesar defeats Pompey's army at the battle of Pharsalus. Brutus and Marcus Tullius Cicero surrender to Caesar and he welcomes them into his camp and forgives them for fighting against him. When Lucius Vorenus tells him that he allowed Pompey to leave unharmed, Caesar is enraged but hesitant to punish him as he believes Lucius is being protected by powerful gods.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 8 Caesarion played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar arrives in Alexandria and after a lengthy declaration of Ptolemy's titles, is introduced to Ptolemy XIII. Caesar is asked by Pothinus how long he intends to stay and Caesar asks him how his civil war is going. Pothinus denies a civil war is happening and then tells Caesar the whereabouts of Cleopatra, Ptolemy's sister is unknown, which Posca whispers to Caesar is a lie. Caesar then asks for the whereabouts of Pompey and then Ptolemy tells his advisers to send Caesar away. Theodotus calms Ptolemy down and then suggests they give Caesar their present and a jar is brought before Caesar. The jar is opened up and Pompey's head is placed on a platter in front of Caesar. Caesar angrily yells at the Egyptians for their brutality and demands that the murderer of Pompey be brought to him tomorrow. That night, Caesar burns the head of Pompey on a pyre. Caesar sends Mark Antony back to Rome and tells him he is going to stay in Egypt to finish the civil war so grain will continue to feed Rome. The next day the murderer is not brought forth and Caesar then has Posca give Pothinus a list of debts he is collecting from Egypt. Ptolemy angrily jumps off his chair and takes the list and throws it at Caesar's feet. Caesar chastises Ptolemy and tells the Egyptians he will stay until their civil war ends. Caesar then sends Lucius Vorenus to find Cleopatra. Later, a Sentry arrives and tells Caesar a messenger has arrived from the Egyptians with a message. Lucius Septimius enters and hands Posca a letter which Posca reads aloud and which reveals Septimius was Pompey's killer. Cleopatra is eventually found and brought before Caesar and they all go to the Egyptian palace. After Ptolemy is deposed, Cleopatra seduces Caesar and they have sex. Nine months later, Cleopatra births a boy and Caesar walks outside to show his soldiers his son.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 9 Utica played by Ciaran Hinds

Back in Rome, Caesar watches a play depicting the final days of Cato and Scipio. After the play Actor for Cato declares is the rising of the sun of Caesarian while also the banishment of the Pompeiian darkness. During a dinner party, Chief Augur asks Caesar if he next intends to fight the Germans, but Caesar tells him he must plan for his Triumph. He asks Octavian what he would do to repair Rome and then tells the Chief Augur that Octavian shall be made a Pontiff as a replacement for one who had died. Later he goes to Lucius Vorenus' home and asks him to become the new Magistrate of Lower Aventine, which Lucius accepts after Caesar assures him that he shall restore Rome as a Republic.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 10 Triumph played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar is nominated by the Senate to be the Emperor of Rome for ten years and he warns the senators that those who oppose his plan to rebuild Rome will not be forgiven. Vercingetorix is brought before him and Caesar tells the guards to clean him up in preparation for his Triumph. As he is dressing for the parade he takes offense when Mark Antony points out the absurdity of Caesar appearing to dress as a demi-god. He goes to the temple where Octavian paints his face with blood and then Caesar rides a chariot in front of the Roman people before ascending stairs to raised seating where he watches Vercingetorix put to death. After anti-Caesar propaganda, with Brutus' name attached to is, is spread around Rome, Brutus approaches Caesar in the Senate and tells him it wasn't him who wrote it and Caesar reassures Brutus that he trusts him.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 11 The Spoils played by Ciaran Hinds

Lucius goes to Caesar and tells him that Mascius and the veterans have demanded farm land near Rome and Caesar agrees to given them lands in Pannonia and tells Lucius to bribe Mascius in order to have Mascius convince the veterans to accept farms in Pannonia. Caesar then invites Lucius and Niobe to Atia's upcoming party. At the party, Atia warns Caesar that Brutus will betray him and it is because of Servilia. At the party, Atia meets Niobe and takes her away to talk while Caesar and Lucius discuss how the deal with Mascius went. Octavian walks up to Lucius and Caesar and mentions that he heard Titus has been put under arrest and he asks them for help to free Titus, which Caesar refuses. Caesar and Brutus are playing a chess or checkers like game when Caesar tells Brutus he would like him to take over the province of Macedonia which Brutus does not wish to do. Caesar admits that he wants Brutus to leave due to the rumors that Brutus will assassinate him and Brutus storms off.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 12 Kalends of February played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar is holding a meeting with Mark Antony, Cicero and Posca present where he is outlining his future projects. Lucius arrives and Caesar decides to make him one of the new Senators in order to please the public who have found Lucius' actions in the arena to be heroic. An exasperated Cicero protests to Caesar that not only has he allowed Gauls and Celts into the Senate but he has now made a plebeian a Senator. Later, Caesar tells Mark Antony and Posca that he made Lucius a Senator in order to have a stealth bodyguard that can follow him anywhere in the Senate. Calpurnia wakes up from a nightmare and warns Caesar that she has had a bad omen. She asks him to leave Rome, but he tells her he has more work to do. As Caesar enters the Senate, Cimber grabs at Caesar who pushes him away and as Casca stabs at Caesar, Caesar grabs the knife by the blade. Caesar is then repeatedly stabbed by a group of Senators. Cassius grabs a knife and puts it in Brutus' hand and tells him to stab Caesar. As Brutus goes up to Caesar they stare into each others eyes and Brutus stabs Caesar dead.
