Detailed Synopsis

Spring, 1847, Fagin stalks a rat as John Gregory shows John Franklin and James Fitzjames the engines on the Erebus and they talk about which survey crew will be successful. John Bridgens speaks to Henry Peglar before he leaves on the survey and gives him a book to read. Franklin gives a speech and then the two groups leave on their respective paths. Lt. Graham Gore's group, consisting of Henry Goodsir, Thomas Hartnell, John Morfin, Charles Des Voeux, Henry Peglar, Charles Best and Sgt. Daniel Bryant, heads towards King William Island. Goodsir mentions that Dr. MacDonald lent him his journal about his experience meeting a group of Inuk. Franklin visits the Terror to try and mend his relationship with Francis Crozier. He suggests that the coming summer will improve their situation, but Crozier thinks things will not improve, based on the weather and his experience. Before leaving, Franklin tells Crozier his toilet has a draft. Gore's group makes it to the edge of the ice shelf. They leave their boat behind and climb over the ice shelf onto King William Island. They walk to the cairn of Sir James Ross and Gore leaves a message behind indicating they are doing well. Gore and Bryant go towards the second cairn while the rest of the group retrieve the boat.

Lt. John Irving catches Cornelius Hickey having sex with William Gibson. Irving orders Hickey to repair Crozier's toilet and when he leaves, Gibson worries that Irving will tell on them, but Hickey doesn't think he will. Goodsir and the others return to the boat and find it overturned and their supplies scattered. Des Voeux thinks a bear did it, and Goodsir worries there might be more than one. Franklin speaks with Fitzjames about his meeting with Crozier and Fitzjames tells him Crozier is a depressive. Bridgens walks in and tells them the first group returned. Lt. George Hodgson tells Franklin that they saw no signs of the ice retreating and some of their supplies were spoiled. Franklin thanks him and then watches as some crew members are playing soccer. He remembers the dinner he had with Lady Jane Franklin and Sophia Cracroft in which Sophia told him and Lady Jane that Crozier had proposed to her again. He advises her to firmly reject Crozier's advances due to Crozier's birth status and looks up to see Crozier standing in the hallway, having heard everything.

During the night Thomas Blanky finds Crozier out on the deck and Crozier recalls Tad, Parry's boat hauling reindeer, that was brought from Norway, but in the end slaughtered due to their uselessness on the ice. Crozier tells Blanky, he is worried they are like the reindeer and may be out of their depth. Blanky tells Crozier if the ice grows too much. the boats may be crushed by the ice. Gore's group is forced inside their tents when they are bombarded by large hail. While they are huddled in their tents, they hear a creature roar. Bryant tells the others, he and Gore were being tracked by a bear. He tells everyone to grab a rifle and when he sees a shadow, shoots at it, hitting a Shaman. Goodsir is called over and finds Lady Silence crying over the wounded Shaman. She starts to say something and worriedly looks around. The others run towards the wounded Shaman, leaving Gore behind. As Goodsir watches, the Tuunbaq charges at Gore and kills him.

Neptune barks at Hickey as he is caulking Crozier's toilet and after Hickey threatens to caulk him, Neptune leaves a poop on the floor. Hickey hears Crozier walking nearby and hurriedly picks up the poop, which endears him to Crozier. Crozier and Hickey bond over being Irish and Crozier offers him a drink. Irving walks in and tells Crozier, Gore's party has returned. The Shaman is brought onto the Erebus where Dr. Stanley refuses to operate on him. Goodsir offers to continue working on the Shaman and Franklin agrees to it. Lady Silence tries to stop Goodsir until Crozier explains to her what is happening. Goodsir tells Crozier that he can't safely remove the bullet and Crozier tells Lady Silence what Goodsir told him. She walks over to Shaman who asks her to try and control Tuunbaq and then dies. Franklin walks in and orders Lady Silence off the ship and after Crozier asks if she can board the Terror, tells him he is to stay on the Erebus until they figure out what happened to Gore. Goodsir is questioned about what happened to Gore and he tells them that it seemed Tuunbaq had tracked them back to the ship. Crozier asks if they found any leads and is told by Goodsir, Gore thought the ice seemed thicker and then tells Franklin, the Shaman had no tongue. Crozier returns to his ship and Dr. MacDonald tells him Lady Silence is in good shape. Crozier apologizes to her and tells her in Igloolik, his name was Aglooka. He tells her he wants to help and she tells him to take the ships away or they will disappear.
