Detailed Synopsis

Albert Wilmarth starts his recollection on the 1927 floods in Vermont. During the flooding, strange things floated downriver and a Farmer finds the remains of a strange creature with crab-like arms. Later, Albert breaks into the home of Eli Davenport and finds a draft copy of his book on Vermont: Tales of the Old Ones. At Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts, Albert shows Nathaniel Ward the draft copy he found. He tells Nathaniel that he is going through with his radio debate with Charles Fort. Nathaniel scrolls through the draft as Albert talks about it including illustrations of The Black Stones of Round Hill. Nathaniel advises against Albert debating Charles, but Albert insists on going to the debate. During the debate hosted by Davis Bradbury, Charles talks about the evidence he has gathered of creatures from other worlds. Henry Akeley listens on his radio as Albert suggests that the reports are from people seeing ordinary objects and letting their imaginations run wild. Charles brings up that the descriptions of beings have been consistent across cultures. Albert notes that people used to believe in witchcraft, but everyone knows better now. He asks Charles if he has seen any of the creatures he writes about and Charles gets Albert to admit that he has never even been to Vermont to investigate the claims. Davis then ends the debate.

As Albert is walking to the post-debate get together, George Akeley approaches him and tells him that Henry needs his help and says he has photographic proof of creatures. Charlie Tower and Jordan Lowell are talking when Albert, George and Nathaniel walk in and they and Charles go into the study and George shows them photos of animal tracks that are pincer-like. He also shows them a photo of stones that the creatures dance around including one that looks like the ones in the draft copy. One of the photos is of Henry the night he shot one of the creatures, but the creature is invisible in the photo. Jordan takes the photo and George says that he sees the creatures flying and hears them talking. Jordan uses stereoscopic viewers and shows the others how the dead creature can now be seen. Dean Hayes walks into the room and says the local paper wants to take a photo of him, Charles and Albert. Charlie sends him away and Albert still refuses to believe the creatures exist. Charles suggests Albert go to Vermont. George tells them that he plans on moving to San Diego. Everyone but Albert and George leave the room and George tells him that he has a recording of the creatures and of cultists that work with them. Later in Albert's office, he listens to the wax cylinder recording, which consists of a cultist chanting and Nathaniel goes to his office and tells him to stop responding to Henry and shows Albert his malformed hand.

Later, Henry writes to Albert and tells him that he is sending George to deliver the stone on George's way to California. Albert waits for George, but he never shows up. He continues to correspond with Henry, and Henry seems increasingly more worried and scared. He eventually receives a typewritten letter from Henry that asks Albert to bring everything he has sent him and that his ideas on the creatures has changed. Albert goes to Vermont and meets P.F. Noyes at the Brattleboro train station. Noyes tells him that Henry is ill and asked him to pick him up. They drive towards Henry's house and while they are driving Albert notices Noyes voice sounds familiar. Noyes pulls over when he sees Walter Brown working on the bridge. Walter tells him that the flood damaged the bridge into town and its unsafe to drive over it. Albert decides to walk the rest of the way and as he is walking he stops at Will Masterson's house to ask for directions to Henry's house. Will gives him directions and as they are talking, Hannah Masterson takes a peek at Albert. As he is walking along Henry's farm, he sees odd tracks in the ground. He goes into Henry's house and finds him coughing and sitting in a chair. Henry asks if Albert brought all the items he had sent him and when Albert asks him about George, Henry seems at first not to remember who George is. Albert sets his things down in his room and goes back to speak with Henry.

Henry tells Albert he regrets sending him the letters and says that he has spoken to the creatures and they are willing to share their secrets with humankind and shares some of their secrets with Albert. He says that he is going with the creatures on their travels and that they can transport human minds, but not their bodies. He tells Albert to go to his hutch which has a machine sitting on it and cylinders with numbers on them on its shelves. He tells Albert to connect B-67 to the machine and a bright light appears in the cylinder, revealing it to contain a human brain. A 2-dimensional face appears over the machine and starts to speak to Albert. He tells him that he met the creatures years ago in the Himalayas and then began to help them. He invites Albert to travel with him and Henry bids Albert goodnight. During the night, Albert notices someone trying to unlock his door. He hears voices and opens the door and sees the shadow of a weirdly shaped creature. Hannah walks towards Albert and tells him to be quiet. She points at him to go out the bedroom window. He jumps out of the window and listens to an argument between Noyes and B-67 who thinks the creatures called the Mi-Go's purpose is to help the human race. Noyes tells Walter to kill Albert and starts to torture B-67 before destroying his brain.

Hannah tells Albert to run, but he says that he can't leave Henry behind. Walter informs Noyes that Albert has escaped and Hannah tells Will that she saw Albert going to the bridge and they all leave. Albert goes back into the house and finds all the evidence he brought burned in the fireplace and the decapitated hands and face of Henry sitting in the chair. He locates a cylinder marked with Henry's name and plugs it in to the machine. Albert introduces himself and Henry notices something is wrong. He realizes the Mi-Go stole his body and says that Will warned him against meddling. Albert realizes that the Mi-Go want to open a doorway. Henry figures out George is dead and asks Henry to kill his brain, but Albert won't do it. Will walks in and points a gun at Albert and says the Mi-Go can't be stopped and the doorway they are opening leads to Earth. He says that Noyes has to lead a ritual and again insists that the Mi-Go can't be stopped. Albert tells him the draft copy mentions the shaman has to go into the portal first in order for it to work. Will again says there is nothing they can do and shoots himself in the head.

Albert takes Henry's brain cylinder with him and goes with Hannah to her barn. He tells Hannah about his daughter who died from the Spanish Flu and says that he has to go and try and stop the ritual. She tells him the best way to get to Round Mountain where the ritual is to be performed and says that she will be safe as Will placed hexes over the barn door and the Mi-Go can't enter. Albert follows Hannah's directions inside of a cave where he finds a lab and Henry's body hanging on hooks with its face and hands missing and tubes running from it. He climbs an odd ladder and emerges at the top of the mountain. He sees Noyes leading a ritual attended by Mi-Go and cultists including Walter. As Noyes is about to jump into the portal, Albert throws Henry's head cylinder in the portal, causing the ritual to fail. The Mi-Go attack and kill Noyes and the cultists. Albert runs back through the cave and down the mountain and back to the barn. The Mi-Go circle the barn, but Albert and Hannah are able to get Will's crop dusting plane started and they fly it out of the barn as the Mi-Go use their mind powers to try and stop them. The Mi-Go attack them and start to destroy the plane. Hannah throws a canister at one of the Mi-Gos, injuring it, but another one grabs Hannah and then drops her to her death. Albert then decides to fly the plane into the portal.

Albert continues his tale as Charlie flies in his plane with Aviatrix in the mountains. He says that he regrets the harm he caused to the Mi-Gos and is grateful that they don't hold a grudge. Meanwhile Jordan excitedly shows a fellow Astronomer his discovery of Pluto. The Superintendent goes to Albert's house with Nathaniel and finds it empty. Albert, now a brain in a cylinder, bids farewell.
