Hannah and her father let Jim and Selena into their apartment and spend the next few days in their apartment. They decide to head for the 42nd blockade near Manchester, which her father hopes will have soldiers that can help them. Her father is infected and shot and killed by the soldiers and Hannah, Selena and Jim are brought to a mansion Major Henry West and his soldiers are using as a base. Before Hannah and Selena are to be given to West's men to be raped, Selena gives Hannah some Valium. Jim saves them, but is shot by West. Hannah then gets into the vehicle West was hiding in and drives it straight towards Private Mailer who is infected. West is killed by Mailer, and Hannah, Selena and Jim escape to the countryside. 28 days later as a jet passes overhead, they unfurl a banner saying hello in the hopes the jet sees them.
