John Franklin remembers the dinner party that was held before they left on the expedition and how Sir John Ross asked him what plans he had made in case the ships are ice locked. Sir Ross warns Franklin that nothing grows in the Arctic and that starving men will turn against their leaders.

November, 1847, Sophia Cracroft and Lady Jane Franklin have a meeting with the leaders of the Discovery Service, consisting of Sir John Barrow, Sir John Ross and Sir James Ross, among others. Sir Barrow tells them, no one has seen either ship recently. He tells them they have nothing to worry about and Lady Jane Franklin reminds him that John Franklin wasn't their first or even third choice for expedition leader. She asks that a search party be sent out and Sir John Ross agrees. Sir James Ross tells Lady Jane Franklin that if no one has heard from the expedition by 1850, then he will search for them himself.
