Background

Thestrals pull the carriages at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

During the events of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

For the first time, Harry Potter is able to see what has been pulling the carriages,Thestrals. Luna Lovegood tells Harry that she can also see the Thestral. Later, he sees Luna petting a Thestral and notices she has no shoes and Luna tells him, her shoes somehow disappeared. She tells Harry about the Thestrals and how only people who have seen death can see them. Harry and Hermione Granger meet up with Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Luna and they fly on Thestrals to the Ministry of Magic.
