[[Fulvio]] enters Caesar's tent and tells him that Pompey's army is on the move and Caesar decides to stand and fight, which confuses Posca due to them being outnumbered, but Caesar tells him their men will be better motivated then Pompey's men as they will be against a proverbial wall.  Caesar defeats Pompey's army at the battle of Pharsalus.  Brutus and [[Marcus Tullius Cicero]] surrender to Caesar and he welcomes them into his camp and forgives them for fighting against him.  When Lucius Vorenus tells him that he allowed Pompey to leave unharmed, Caesar is enraged but hesitant to punish him as he believes Lucius is being protected by powerful gods.

Caesar

Background

Caesar is a Consul of the Roman Republic and in charge of the 13th Legion of the Roman Army. He is married to Calpurnia and had a daughter named Julia who was married to Pompey Magnus, but died during childbirth.


During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 1 The Stolen Eagle played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar and his 13th Legion defeat the Gaulish army of Vercingetorix. He receives a letter from Pompey Magnus informing him his Daughter Julia died while giving birth to a stillborn daughter. A group of men wearing blue dye break into Caesar's camp and steal the eagle standard. Marcus Junius Brutus arrives at Caesar's camp and they discuss recent events and Brutus' mother Servilia of the Junii, who is upset Caesar hasn't written to her lately. Mark Antony interrupts them and asks for gold to reclaim the eagle standard. Caesar orders Strabo to give Antony the gold he needs. Brutus asks about the eagle and Caesar tells him about its theft and the discontent amongst the legion it has caused. Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo return to camp with the standard and Gaius Octavian. Caesar is given Sextus' severed head and he realizes Pompey has already turned against him. Caesar and his army burn their camp and are on the move.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 2 How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic played by Ciaran Hinds

During the winter in Gaul near the Italian border, Posca tells Caesar more troops are deserting. He warns Caesar time is running out and they must act, however Caesar reassures Posca he knows what he is doing. When Posca notices a large sum of money has been spent, Caesar tells him he has spent it to nominate Mark Antony as the people's tribune. A Tribune reads off the amount of available soldiers to Caesar when a Courier arrives with news of the attack on Mark Antony and the senate proposal. Mark Antony returns to camp and Caesar parades him in front of the troops as a justified reason to invade Rome beyond Caesar being declared an enemy of Rome. Titus is awarded for his bravery with a bag of coins. Caesar and his men cross the Rubicon into Italy.

Caesar orders Lucius to take Titus and a group of Ubiians to Rome to post a proclamation on the Senate door. He then asks Mark Antony why Lucius seems upset and Mark Antony tells him it is because Lucius feels he will be punished by the Gods for being a traitor. Caesar asks if Lucius can be trusted and Mark Antony promises him Lucius wouldn't betray the 13th Legion. As they near Rome, Mark Antony asks Caesar how he can be so calm and Caesar admits he doesn't feel calm on the inside.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 4 Stealing from Saturn played by Ciaran Hinds

Caesar goes to the Temple of Jupiter to ask the augurs if they can determine if the Gods favor him. The Chief Augur tells him they will do an augur on the first clean morning. At Atia's dinner party, Caesar and Mark Antony approach the Chief Augur and offer him a bribe, which he accepts. During the party, Posca calls Caesar to the front door and finds Titus Pullo with a tied up Quintus Pompey. Titus tells him and Mark Antony he has the stolen Roman gold and where it is. Caesar tells Quintus he will offer his father a truce and his him sent on his way. He tells Mark Antony to take Titus and to bring the gold back. As he is talking to Octavian, Caesar suffers from a seizure and Posca and Octavian hide him in a storage closet until the seizure passes. Demeter hears a heavy breathing noise coming from the storage room and later sees Caesar and Octavian leave the room. Caesar leaves the party, but instead of going home, he meets with Servilia and they make love. At the Temple of Jupiter the Chief Augur has a group of pigeons released and then tells Caesar the Gods favor him.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 5 The Ram has Touched the Wall played by Ciaran Hinds

Posca tells Caesar he has been invited to dine with Atia, but Caesar tells Posca to decline her offer. Caesar continues his affair with Servilia. When Caesar receives the acceptance of his truce letter from Pompey, he refuses to accept the truce due to Pompey refusing to meet him. He chooses not to pursue Pompey, for he thinks Pompey's forces are shrinking every day. While Caesar, Posca and Calpurnia are traveling through Rome, they come across the graffiti depicting Caesar having sex with Servilia. Calpurnia orders Caesar to break up with Servilia or she will divorce him. Caesar goes to the home of Servilia and tells her they can no longer see each other. He then tells Mark Antony he will stay in Rome while Caesar travels south to attack Pompey. When Caesar arrives at Pompey's camp, he finds it deserted and is told Pompey has fled to Greece.
