Vladimir goes home and [Pietrov asks him how hunting went. He mentions their new neighbors and Maria tells him, they received a letter from them and they are the Duchess of Zasyekin and Zinka. Maria says that they are impoverished and the butler tells them that they didn't even arrive in their own carriage. Maria tells Vladimir to deliver a reply. At dinner, the Duchess tells Pietrov that her husband squandered all of their money and Maria offers to speak to the prince on her behalf. While in the woods, Vladimir sees Zinka riding horses with Pietrov. Count Miliski goes to Pietrov's home and Pietrov tells him to not come over again. As Vladimir is riding horses with Pietrov, Pietrov walks off and meets up with Zinka to have an affair.
