During the events of Black Sails: Season 2 Episode 1 IX. played by Rupert Penry-Jones

In London in 1705, a younger Captain Flint meets Thomas who tells him the history of the pirate issue in Nassau. He says that he has a plan to rid Nassau of the pirates and worries that Flint might be more interested in rising in his career than in accomplishing the goal. Flint takes Thomas to a pirate hanging and tells him that the difficulty in changing the world is fighting against everyone else who want the status quo.

In the past, Thomas tells Flint that everyone needs a partner and that he feels that Flint believes his plan to clean up Nassau will fail. Thomas says that the root causes of Nassau's pirate problems are its corruption and poor leadership. He asks Flint what would be needed to return Nassau to profitability and Flint lists farmers, magistrates, carpenters, clergy, food, ships, sailors and an honest governor.

In the past, Thomas explains to Flint that Governor Robert Thompson is one of the main impediments to stopping the pirate scourge in the West Indies. He tells him that Thompson accepts bribes from the pirates and then complains about the pirate scourge to his supporters in London. Flint tells Hamilton that even if they appointed an honest person to run the Bahamas, his ambition will cause him to become dishonest. Miranda enters the room and gives Flint a copy of Don Quixote written in Spanish.
