Antoine

Background

Antoine is a Creole living in New Orleans. He is engaged to Suzanne. Antoine has been involved in multiple duels.

During the events of Quadroon (1971) played by Robert Priest

Antoine meets Caleb Wycliffe and tells him about Cesare Dupree and the rumors surrounding him. He then tells him about the tradition for Creole men to have Quadroon mistresses and of the Quadroon Ball. He takes Caleb to see Celeste Labusse to teach her daughter Coral Labusse how to write and read in English. After his teaching, Caleb tells Antoine about Coral and Antoine explains how Quadroon mothers are paid for their daughters. He tells Caleb, Jacques is to be sold and they go with Aunt Nancy to purchase Jacques. Antoine then takes Caleb to a fencing school and introduces him to Mereaux and Felix Ledeux. At the Quadroon Ball, Antoine insults Felix and Felix challenges him to a duel. Antoine wins and kills Felix, but is wounded in the side. Later, Antoine advises Caleb to choose pistols in his duel with Dupree. Antoine goes to the duel and congratulates Caleb when he wins and tells him he has insulted Dupree by not wasting a bullet on him. After Celeste and Coral are put into prison as slaves, Antoine goes with Caleb to buy Celeste. They then devise a plan to free Coral and to have her and Caleb flee. Antoine arrives at the meeting point and tells Caleb that the ship won't leave until tomorrow and Coral that Celeste was murdered. Dupree arrives and Antoine challenges him to a duel. Dupree refuses to fight Antoine and instead makes Caleb duel with him. Antoine then watches as Caleb and Jacques are shot dead and Coral is taken away by Dupree. He stares at Caleb and Jacques' bodies and then leaves. As he is walking along the street, he comes across a tourist looking at the flyer for the Quadroon Ball. Antoine then explains to him about Quadroons and the ball, as he once did with Caleb.
