While Eleanor is talking with Mr. Soames, Max and Throckmorton show her a piece of paper with a black mark and a threat if Vane's body is not removed from the gibbet. Throckmorton tells Eleanor that someone left it on the foot of his bed while he slept. Throckmorton thinks it is an empty threat, but Max suggests they remove Vane's body to quell some of the unrest. Soames thinks that removing the body would give the appearance that they are weak, and Eleanor agrees with him. Later, Throckmorton is found hanging from a building in the town square.
