Detailed Synopsis

Harry Potter is sitting in the playground watching a mother and her children bond. Dudley Dursley and his friends Piers and Malcolm walk over to Harry and Dudley starts making fun of Harry. Harry pulls out his wand and points it at Dudley and Piers and Malcolm laugh. It suddenly becomes very cloudy and windy and Piers and Malcolm run away. Harry and Dudley run towards a walking underpass and are then attacked by Dementors. Harry casts Expecto Patronum and saves himself and Dudley. As he is checking to make sure Dudley is okay, Mrs. Arabella Figg walks up to Harry and she advises him not to put away his wand in case the Dementors come back. She explains to Harry that Albus Dumbledore asked her to keep an eye on Harry. Aunt Petunia Dursley is watching the news where TV Weatherman is talking about how hot the weather is. Aunt Petunia sees Dudley, who is in a daze and tells Uncle Vernon Dursley to come over. Uncle Vernon asks Dudley who did it to him, and Dudley points at Harry. A letter from the Ministry of Magic arrives and Mafalda Hopkirk's voice rings out and she accuses Harry of breaking the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery and therefore, he is expelled from Hogwarts. Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia take Dudley to the hospital and Harry apologizes to Hedwig for getting angry and looks at his photo of James Potter and Lily Potter and then remembers the murder of Cedric Diggory at the hands of Voldemort.

He wakes up to someone opening the door to his room and Nymphadora Tonks, Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Elphias Doge, and Emmeline Vance walk in and Alastor tells him they are here to save him. Kingsley tells Harry that Dumbledore persuaded Cornelius Fudge to hold a trial before expelling Harry. They go to Grimmauld Place where Sirius Black is having a meeting with Mr Weasley, Professor Lupin, Professor McGonagall, and Mrs Weasley. Mrs Weasley directs Harry upstairs and as Harry is walking upstairs, he hears Kreacher complaining about the members of the Order of the Phoenix being in the home. Harry goes into the room and is greeted by Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. They tell him, Grimmauld Place is the headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. Fred Weasley and George Weasley appear and use a listening ear to spy on the meeting going on, which also includes Professor Snape. Ginny Weasley walks down the stairs and Crookshanks sees the listening ear and eats it. The meeting ends and Harry says hello to everyone and Sirius gives him a hug. Kingsley hands Harry a newspaper where Fudge is accusing him and Dumbledore of lying about Voldemort. Sirius tells Harry that Voldemort has been trying to recruit followers and that Voldemort is trying to get something he didn't have last time.

The next day, Harry is taken to face trial in front of the Wizengamot by Mr Weasley. Newspaper Vendor is selling copies of the Daily Prophet calling Dumbledore daft. In the elevator, Mr Weasley says hello to Bob. The Voice of Lift tells them when they arrive at the Department of Mysteries. Harry and Mr Weasley see Fudge speaking to Lucius Malfoy, who is trying to convince Fudge to convict Harry. The trial starts and Dumbledore arrives just in time after not being told the trial would start early. Harry tells the Wizengamot, which includes Dolores Umbridge and Amelia Bones, that he used magic to fight against the Dementors in order to save Dudley. Mrs. Arabella Figg takes the stand and describes the Dementors. A vote is taken and Harry is cleared of the charges. Harry goes to leave for Hogwarts, but before he does, Sirius gives him a photo of the original Order of the Phoenix, which included Neville Longbottom's parents. Harry takes the train to Hogwarts and when he arrives, Draco Malfoy, along with Crabbe and Goyle, starts harassing Harry. Harry sees Cho Chang, who smiles at him, and Neville, says hello to Harry, Hermione and Ron. For the first time, Harry is able to see what has been pulling the carriages, a Thestral. Luna Lovegood tells Harry that she can also see the Thestral.

During the banquet, Dumbledore welcomes back Professor Grubbly-Plank as the Care of Magical Creatures while Hagrid is away. He then introduces Dolores as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Dolores interrupts Dumbledore and tells the students that the Ministry of Magic is very concerned about their education. Harry walks into the Gryffindor common room and says hello to Seamus Finnegan and Dean Thomas. Seamus tells Harry, his mom almost prevented him from coming back to Hogwarts on account of what the Daily Prophet has been reporting about Harry and Dumbledore. Harry calls Seamus and his mom stupid and Ron comes to Harry's defense. In class, Parvati Patel watches as Padma Patel levitates a paper bird and sends it flying around class. Dolores destroys the paper bird and then tells the class that she will focus on teaching them to pass the Ordinary Wizarding Levels or OWLs. Dolores tells the class that the idea that Voldemort is alive is a lie and as Harry argues with her, orders Harry to see her after class for detention. For detention, Harry is forced to write "I must not tell lies" using a special quill, and as he does, the words are etched into his hand.

Fred and George are showing classmates their candies that can make them ill in order to miss class. Hermione notices the wound on Harry's hand and wants Harry to report it, but he refuses. Harry writes a letter to Sirius and then takes a walk in the woods. He sees Luna petting a Thestral and notices she has no shoes and Luna tells him, her shoes somehow disappeared. She tells Harry about the Thestrals and how only people who have seen death can see them. She tells him that both she and her dad believe Harry about Voldemort. She then tells him that Voldemort would want Harry to think he is alone. Dolores and McGonagall have an argument about Harry's punishment and Dolores declares that things at Hogwarts are worse than the Ministry thought. Mr Filch posts a decree stating that Dolores has been appointed as the Hogwarts High Inquisitor. Dolores starts to questions the professors and creates increasingly more and more decrees including the banning of all Weasley products. As she is monitoring Professor Flitwick and the choir perform, she uses a measuring tape to measure Flitwick. She asks Professor Sybil Trelawney to predict something and Trelawney tells her that she is in grave danger. Trelawney is fired by Dolores and Dolores has Filch bring Trelawney's things out to the courtyard. Dumbledore walks out into the courtyard and has McGonagall bring Trelawney's things back inside and tells Dolores she can only fire professors, not expel them from Hogwarts.

Fudge accuses Sirius of causing the sudden disappearances of people and Sirius appears in the Gryffindor common room fireplace and tells Harry, Ron and Hermione that Fudge thinks Dumbledore is trying to form a wizard army to take on the Ministry of Magic. Hermione organizes a meeting with some of the other students at Hog's Head, where Barman works. Somewhat Doubtful Boy wonders why they need to be taught how to combat the dark arts and Slightly Creepy Boy asks Harry to describe more of what happened when Cedric was killed. Nigel asks if Voldemort is really back, and Harry tells everyone he is. They then form a group called Dumbledore's Army. Dolores sees Harry and the others walking back to Hogwarts and makes a decree that all student organizations are banned. As Neville is walking down the hall, the Room of Requirement appears before him. Dumbledore's Army, which consists of Harry, Hermione, Ron, Fred, George, Ginny, Neville, Cho, Nigel, Dean, Padma, Parvati, Somewhat Doubtful Boy, Slightly Creepy Boy and others, uses the Room of Requirement to train. As the students train, Filch tries to discover their hideout. After Finch continues to fail at finding their secret hideout, a student Inquisitorial Squad is created and Draco, Crabbe and Goyle join it. Dumbledore's Army has one last lesson before Christmas break and Cho stays after class and she and Harry kiss under mistletoe.

Harry has a nightmare that Mr Weasley was attacked by Nagini and tells McGonagall who takes him and the Weasley children to Dumbledore. Harry tells Dumbledore about his dream and Dumbledore tells Everard to contact those at the Ministry to save Mr Weasley and has Phineas notify the Order of the Phoenix. Snape takes Harry down to his office and trains him in the use of Occlumency. On Christmas, Harry, Sirius and Hermione join the Weasley family at Grimmauld Place for Christmas dinner and gifts and Mr Weasley is shown to be recovering from his attack. Harry walks into a tapestry room and Kreacher critiques Harry and his friendships. Sirius sends Kreacher away and explains his family tree to Harry. Harry tells Sirius that he is worried that he is becoming like Voldemort. The students return and Hermione tells Harry that Hagrid is back. They and Ron run to his cabin and an injured Hagrid tells them Dumbledore sent him to try and get the giants on their side and then feeds Fang the steak he was using to stop his wounds from swelling. Thunder rages outside Azkaban and the Death Eater tattoo on Azkaban Death Eater's and Bellatrix Lestrange's arm starts to come alive. Azakaban prison explodes allowing the prisoners to flee.

Fudge tells the Daily Prophet that Sirius is to blame for releasing the prisoners. Seamus tells Harry that now he and his mom believe what Harry saw. More students join Dumbledore's Army. During one of their training sessions, they are caught by Dolores, Filch and the student members of the inquisitors. Percy Weasley drags Harry and Cho, who told the location of the training session, to the meeting with Fudge, Kingsley, Dawlish and Dolores in Dumbledore's office. They accuse Dumbledore of forming an army to revolt against the Ministry. Fudge orders Kingsley and Dawlish to take Dumbledore to Azkaban and Dumbledore escapes with the help of Fawkes. Dolores replaces Dumbledore as head of Hogwarts and all members of Dumbledore's Army are required to go to detention where they are forced to experience the same abuse as Harry was. Hagrid takes Harry, Hermione and Ron to meet his half-brother, Grawp. Grawp takes a liking to Hermione and picks her up, until she orders him to put her down and then gives her a bike handle with a bike bell. Snape continues to train Harry in Occlumency, and Harry manages to get into Snape's memories and sees a memory of Snape's where he is picked on by James, Sirius, Peter Pettigrew and Remus. Snape kicks Harry out of his mind and refuses to train him in Occlumency anymore. During the year 5 OWL exam, Fred and George burst into the exam room and quit school while also creating a fireworks display that destroys all of Dolores' framed decrees.

Harry has a vision of Sirius being tortured by Voldemort and he, Ron and Hermione go into Dolores' office to use her chimney flue. They are caught by Dolores and the student inquisitorial squad. Dolores tells Snape to bring her truth juice, but he tells her that she used the last of it on Cho. Dolores is about to use the Cruciatus Curse on Harry when Hermione tells her that they know where Dumbledore's secret weapon is hidden. Harry, Hermione and Ron take her to the Forbidden Forest where they encounter a group of Centaurs. Dolores insults the Centaurs and one of them fires an arrow at her. She retaliates by casting a spell which causing an ever tightening rope to strangle the Centaur. Grawp grabs and lifts up Dolores and the Centaurs encircle Grawp and he gives Dolores to the Centaurs. Harry and Hermione meet up with Ron, Ginny, Neville, and Luna and they fly on Thestrals to the Ministry of Magic.

They take the elevator to the Department of Mysteries and Neville finds a globe of prophecy with Harry's name on it. Harry picks up the prophecy which states that neither him or Voldemort can survive while the other lives. They are surrounded by Death Eaters, including Lucius, who reveals to Harry that Voldemort tricked him and Sirius was not in danger. They demand the prophecy and a running battle starts. Harry and the others escape to the room of the Veil where they are surrounded by the Death Eaters and his friends are captured. The Order of the Phoenix arrive and another battle starts. The prophecy is destroyed when Lucius drops it. Bellatrix casts the Avada Kedavra spell against Sirius, hurtling him towards the Veil, which absorbs him. Harry chases after Bellatrix and is about to kill her when Voldemort shows up and tries to convince Harry to kill her. Dumnbledore arrives and attacks Voldemort. As the battle rages, Fudge and other members of the Ministry appear and as Voldemort is ultimately defeated by Dumbledore and runs away, Fudge finally acknowledges that Voldemort is back. The Daily Prophet reports that Harry has been vindicated, Dumbledore has been reinstated and Dolores has been suspended. The school year ends and Harry tells his friends that they have one thing that Voldemort doesn't have, friendship.
